Development Update
SoFurry NEXT - Open Beta Announcement
Posted 3 months ago
It’s finally time - we are starting the open beta for the next version of SoFurry next week!
Soon you’ll be able to access the next version of SoFurry, which is currently still in a closed beta state at https://sofurrybeta.com
Beginning with the next week we will open up the beta to everyone and registration will no longer require a beta key. We have several hundred users in the current wait list who will get immediate access. Anyone wanting to check it out will be able to join once the beta goes public, or you can register now and be notified as one of the first people to get access to the new site!
As you’ll be able to see for yourself, SoFurry is going to change quite significantly. This isn’t just an update, it is a complete rewrite from scratch. There are a ton of new features, from multi-submissions to completely new content types, analytics and built-in help and documentation at https://sofurrybeta.com/help, along with modern security features such as multifactor authentication and passkey support.
However, we know it’s not quite done yet. We need feedback from you, our users. If you remember back when SF 2.0 launched, it looked quite different to the site that you see today. That change was driven in large parts by you! We absolutely expect the same to be true for the next SoFurry. Also, please note that there are a number of known issues and missing features, hence the whole “beta” thing. But we have reached a point where we simply have to get more people onto the site and actively using it to be able to iron out the kinks.
Please use the on-site report form at https://sofurrybeta.com/reports/new to give feedback or report bugs. If you spot something you don’t like, the best thing you can do is to provide suggestions for improvement and/or give examples for how it should work or look like. Please do not expect feature parity with the old site - in part this is simply unrealistic due to the size of our team, and in part it’s a deliberate choice to not continue to support features that see little to no use, like groups.
We are always looking for more help. SF is run by a small team and if you can contribute to the development, please let us know (for example, via the report form).
Finally, allow me to address a point that is rather delicate. As you are no doubt aware, Dragoneer, the owner of FurAffinity, passed away last week. We had long internal discussions about this and the timing of the open beta. When is it okay to do a public beta when the owner of arguably *the* most influential furry site has passed away? In the end we decided to push the public opening for a week. At the end of the day, this is just a beta, not a full launch. Bugs and problems will happen. SFX is not ready for prime time just yet. We don’t expect to “profit” from the misfortune of FurAffinity, nor is that the intention.
Please consider giving SFX a go and let us know what you think. Remember, if you currently have an SF account, you can just log in at https://sofurrybeta.com with your SF username and password, and once we start the open beta next week, the site will guide you through the migration of your submissions.
Thanks for your continued trust and support. We hope you like the new place, or at the very least, that it’s not too far off from where it needs to be!
