PART:1.
The name is Mitchell Anick and I’m a Husky standing at just 6 foot zip in height, jet black fur covers my body with the exception of one or two patches of hazel. Don’t let appearances fool you, sure I’m a cuddly young Husky, I’m also a straight acting gay Husky, but above all that I’m a Husky with a record, amongst my fellow thieves and acquaintances I’m known by my nickname, Manick.
Most of you will tell me that I’m nothing more than a common thief, but being a thief has been my trade for nearly fifteen years now, and I have only been careless enough to get caught twice. The first time that I got caught was when I ran with a small gang of thieves, I figured that there was safety in numbers, and I believed in the old maxim that a band of thieves would stick together, hence the saying as thick as thieves, but the day I got caught the first time, I learned a very valuable lesson that day, don’t rely on your fellow thieves to get you out of trouble, I learned that the only guy that was going to look out for me was.....me.
Well I got sent to prison for twelve long months, and I hated every minute of being in that place. Now you would have thought that after twelve hellish months inside prison, that once I was released I would get myself back on the straight and narrow, ya know, job, house, car, wife and three point four children, the family life wasn’t for this Husky, so I immediately got back into my thieving habits. All was well with my life again, I was clearing quite a bit of money from my robberies, most of which goes on booze, that is until my second careless act.
<><><><><><><><><><>
It all started a week ago, I pulled a heist on a top end jewellery store, nothing new there, I had done stores like this many times, but this time was to turn out to be the moment where I started to think about getting out of the robbery business.
After the robbery, I jumped into the car that I had left running and sped off out of town, this time though I wasn’t alone, the heist had been a set up, I looked in my rear view mirror to see the car of my nemesis, Detective Mace Smith, hot on my heels. I press my foot paw down hard on the gas pedal and head down the road at speed, every few seconds checking over my shoulder to see if Mace is still following me.
That was to turn out to be my undoing, I turn my head back one final time to look at the road ahead only to realise that there is a huge police road block right in front of me. I quickly yank the steering wheel to the left and just scrape passed the final car in the road block, Mace, however, was not quite so lucky.
He hit the rear car at full speed; he seemed to be able to get control of his car back, but less than half a mile later his car spears off the road and down a steep embankment. I know that I should continue on my way, but for reasons as yet unknown I hit the brakes and turn the car around. I race back to where Mace’s car had gone off the road, I jump out of my car and I clamber down the embankment towards the heavily wrecked car. I don’t remember much of what happened next, but whatever it was changed my life forever.
<><><><><><><><><><>
I wake up in a hospital bed; I feel pain all over the back of my legs and my back. My eyes focus a little more and it’s now that I see him, the Rottweiler that had devoted a good part of his life to pursuing me, Detective Mace Smith. My eyes open fully and I can see that he is standing with the aid of crutches; he slowly makes his way over to my bedside and speaks.
“Why did you do it Manick? Why did you turn around and come back for me? You should have left me to die in the wreck, but instead you came back and rescued me from the car”
I gently raise my head to reply.
“I.....I saved your life?”
He gently rubs my shoulder and continues.
“Yes you did, and nearly paid for your actions with your own life, the doctors tell me that they removed twenty five pieces of shrapnel from the back of your legs and your back. Now I am back on active duty, though for a while it is just a desk job, but still I am a serving police officer and though it kills me to have to do this Mitchell, while you are awake I have to perform my duty, I am placing you under arrest for armed robbery, you do not have to say anything, but anything you do say will be taken down and used against you in a court of law”
The detective sighs and sits gently on the edge of my bed.
“Mitchell, I’m afraid that once you are well enough to leave hospital I will have to take you into custody, though it gives me no pleasure to say this, you are going down for a fair stretch this time”
So this is it, my second black mark and I know that as soon as I get the all clear from the hospital, it will be a long time before the sunlight hits my fur again.
<><><><><><><><><>
The day finally arrives where I am deemed well enough to leave the hospital, with the aid of my crutches I walk to the open door of my room and take a look outside, there is a heavy police presence, sure I know that I could try and make a run for it, but realistically I know that I wouldn’t get far with these damn crutches.
I slowly walk out into the corridor and I’m met by Detective Smith, to my surprise I see that he doesn’t have his paw cuffs ready and I raise an inquisitive eyebrow. The detective answers my question.
“I don’t think there will be any need for paw cuffs; if you run you won’t get far, besides the way that you have just slowly made your way from your room tells me that you aren’t going to give me any trouble. I want to be able to let you walk out of hospital with at least some degree of dignity, after you saved my life, I think it is the least that I can do”
With my head down and my tail drooping I gently place my crutches against the reception desk and speak to the nurse.
“Give these to someone who deserves them, where I’m going I won’t need them”
I stand next to Detective Smith and continue.
“Ok Detective I believe that you were just about to take me into custody? Don’t worry, I will come quietly, I won’t give you grief”
With that said the Rottweiler gently takes my right arm in his paw and leads me out to his waiting car. Once in the car I’m driven to the police station and then taken into a police holding cell to await my appointment with the judge.
<><><><><><><><><><><><>
It is now two days since I left the hospital, that’s two days that I have been cooped up in this pokey cell, suddenly the lock on the cell door clanks and the door slowly opens, in the doorway stands a very smartly dressed Rottweiler, and I know that this can only mean one thing, the day of my court appearance is at paw.
I stand on shaky legs and fearing that I may fall one of the attending officers rushes in to catch me but I put up my paw to stop him, I begin to steady my legs and then I start slowly moving towards the door.
I now stand at the door and Detective Smith speaks.
“I’m sorry to have to do this Mitchell, but I need you to turn around and put your paws behind your back, I have to cuff you its police procedure”
I know that I can’t argue with the police anymore so I dutifully turn around and place my paws behind my back and rest them just above the base of my tail. I feel the slight pressure of the cuffs as they are closed around my wrists, the cold hard steel that tells me that I really need to change my life.
With the cuffs in place again I’m taken to a waiting police truck to begin my journey to the local magistrates’ court.
After a journey of some twenty minutes my journey is finally over, flanked by two armed police officers Detective Smith leads me into the lobby of the courthouse, where we wait for my case to be called.
Finally after a ten minute wait my case is finally called, again flanked by the armed officers we start to head towards the courtroom, suddenly we stop and Mace turns towards the two armed police and speaks.
“Guys stand down for peats sake, we’re in a courthouse, and Mr Anick is in cuffs, so I think we can pretty much say that an armed escort is no longer needed”
The two armed officers’ stand down and head back to the waiting area, Mace continues to lead me to the courtroom and with each step my legs feel as though they are getting ever weaker.
Mace leads me into the box and gently sits me down; he then takes a seat beside me and remains silent. I look around the courtroom and see that it is full with furs who would love to see me get the chair, or a lethal injection, fortunately for me though the UK doesn’t recognise the death penalty.
After a few seconds we are all asked to rise as the judge makes his way to his seat. Once he is ready everyone is told to sit, everyone that is except me. The judge looks at his case notes for a good few moments; he then removes his glasses and looks directly at me.
“Mr Anick, the purpose of this hearing is for us to go through some of the details of the case and it will also allow you the chance to enter a plea, depending on your plea I will then make a judgement on whether to send you for trial or to just send you to prison”
The judge is silent again as he takes a look at the latest report from the last robbery, his eyebrows raise when he reaches a certain point in the report; he then looks me in the eyes again.
“Mr Anick, it states in this report that after your latest robbery you did something quite remarkable, you saw the Detectives car head off the road and down an embankment, but instead of driving on to freedom, you turned around and went back to the stricken vehicle and pulled the Detective from the wreckage, you then made sure that Detective Smith was clear of the wreckage but where yourself caught in the explosion that followed. I also have the doctors report in front of me and I note that you had twenty five pieces of shrapnel embedded into various parts of your body, and that you were only released from hospital this morning”
A whispered gasp travels around the courtroom at this revelation, the judge then continues.
“Now Mr Anick, I would like to know if you would like to enter a plea at this point.”
I bow my head slightly and reply.
“Your honour, there is only one plea that I can enter, I’m tired of running so I would like to plead guilty”
Again there is another gasp that travels around the room. The judge solemnly nods his head and continues.
“Very well Mr Anick, your plea has been recorded; the court will now recess for two hours to allow me the time to come to my decision”
With that the judge cleared the courtroom and I was taken back out into the waiting area to await my fate.
