\n Part 2.

\n

\n

\n

\n The emergency services arrive at the scene of total carnage; the fire crews begin the task of bringing the fire under control whilst the ambulance crews take care of the survivors. The first of the furs to get attention for obvious reasons are those with life threatening injuries, the walking wounded which include both me and Luke have our slight injuries treated by the Red Cross and St. John's Ambulance.

\n

\n

\n

\n Luke and I look back at the burnt out and smouldering wreckage and we both say a silent prayer, not only for the fact that so many survived, but for those who perished and their loved ones. With our injuries now treated, a police man comes towards me and Luke, the German Shepherd has a kindly look on his face, though he clearly has been affected by what he has seen.

\n

\n

\n

\n "Hi my name is Sergeant Oliver Dale, First of all guys, are you both ok?"

\n

\n

\n

\n Luke and I look at each other and then back to the Shepherd, I make our reply.

\n

\n

\n

\n "We are ok I guess, we just wish that we could have helped more folks get off the train before it..........blew"

\n

\n

\n

\n The Shepherd puts his shaky paw on my shoulder.

\n

\n

\n

\n "Guys, you managed to rescue a number of folks from the train even though you were both hurt, you thought of others before yourselves, and in this day and age that is a very rare thing to see, a lot of folks owe you their lives"

\n

\n

\n

\n The Shepherd continues.

\n

\n

\n

\n "Now I know that this will be upsetting for the two of you, but I need to ask you what happened"

\n

\n

\n

\n Luke and I recount as much of the incident as we can, from the explosion right through to where we went back on board the train to get others free, the Shepherd's face takes on a sadder look with each part of the harrowing detail. As we come to the end of our story the Shepherd speaks again.

\n

\n

\n

\n "Well guys, I have both of your addresses written down so if I need to I can contact you, but for now there is nothing more that I need to be told, don't be surprised if the papers and the TV news want to get interviews with two genuine Heroes"

\n

\n

\n

\n With that said the Shepherd made his way back through the crowds. I look to Luke and a weak smile crosses my muzzle.

\n

\n

\n

\n "I guess we won't be going into work for a day or so, so why don't we go grab a bite to eat and then head back to my place, we can just come to terms with what has happened, and then later on I'll drop you off at your place, making sure that I have your phone number of course"

\n

\n

\n

\n Luke looks back at me with a confused look on his muzzle.

\n

\n

\n

\n "You want my phone number, why would you want to know my phone number?"

\n

\n

\n

\n I tentatively wrap an arm around his neck and make my reply.

\n

\n

\n

\n "Well Luke, how else am I gonna call you to set up the date that we are going on?"

\n

\n

\n

\n Luke lets out a gasp and I feel his shoulders begin to shake. He turns to me with a look of uncertainty now registered on his face.

\n

\n

\n

\n "Look Daniel, you are one ridiculously handsome guy, why on earth would you wanna be seen with me? I mean look at me, I'm just your average bog standard wolf, whereas you my friend are the perfect definition of the Doberman breed, seriously you can do so much better than me"

\n

\n

\n

\n We begin to walk away from the devastation; Luke still has his muzzle facing me, still waiting for an answer, so I decide that I have to give him something to believe in. I quickly take the back of his head in my paw and pull his muzzle in closer and I kiss him. Luke's eyes jump out on stalks, at first he tries to pull away from the kiss but then slowly he melted into it.

\n

\n

\n

\n Reluctantly we break the kiss after a short while and we continue walking towards the nearest café. Once at the café we order some food and drinks and then we take a seat towards the back where it is a little more private. Luke manages to recover his breath after the kiss and speaks.

\n

\n

\n

\n "Well god damn, I guess I got my answer, the thing is though I have never been any good with relationships, they just never seem to last"

\n

\n

\n

\n I take his paw in mine and reply.

\n

\n

\n

\n "Luke, you said that I am a handsome guy, me personally I don't see it, but I also don't take much interest in the looks of the other guy either, what I look for in a mate is someone who has heart, and someone that won't raise his tail for just anyone. Ok if you can look me dead in my eyes and tell me that you are not interested in starting a relationship with me, fine, I will still take your number, because after all, guys do go out and have fun without ending up in bed together"

\n

\n

\n

\n Luke looks me dead in the eyes, but no matter how torn he was feeling inside he just couldn't tell me that he wasn't interested, so I continue.

\n

\n

\n

\n "You feel the same way that I do hun, I won't deny that I have had my fair share of heartbreaks, but with you I get a sense that you are the one that will love me for who I am and not for what I am"

\n

\n

\n

\n I release his paw as our food and drinks arrive. We both finish our meals and then step outside the café, we look to our left and we can still see the devastation now being taken care of by the emergency services. We head down the road for a while and then I hail a cab; we get into the cab and head towards my apartment.

\n

\n

\n

\n As we near my apartment building we notice a fleet of trucks outside with people in what look like space suits walking into and out of my building, the entrance doorway to which is covered by some sort of tent. I tell the taxi driver to pull over and I pay him what he is owed. Luke and I get out of the cab and walk a little closer to see what is going on.

\n

\n

\n

\n We walk for about one hundred meters when we come up on a sign which reads "NO UNAUTHORISED PERSONEL BEYOND THIS POINT", there is a soldier standing by the sign, a Labrador in full army uniform, so I ask what is going on.

\n

\n

\n

\n "Excuse me bud, but what's going on?"

\n

\n

\n

\n The Labrador makes his reply.

\n

\n

\n

\n "Sorry sir, but there has been a chemical incident and we can't allow civilians passed this point until the all clear is given"

\n

\n

\n

\n I thank the soldier and we turn around and head towards an alleyway that leads to the parking area for my apartment block. We arrive at my car and I fish my keys out from my jacket pocket and unlock the doors, we both get in and buckle up.

\n

\n

\n

\n "Ok, well it seems that my apartment is going to be out of bounds for at least today, so I will take you home and then I will find myself a Bed and Breakfast place, for the night"

\n

\n

\n

\n Luke places his paw on my thigh and gives a gentle squeeze as he replies.

\n

\n

\n

\n "Daniel, you're giving me a ride home, your apartment is out of bounds, so the least I can do is offer you somewhere to crash for the night"

\n

\n

\n

\n A weak smile graces my muzzle as I nod gently in acceptance of the generous offer. I start the car and we make the ten mile journey back to Luke's place, as we turn into his street we see a familiar sight, a fleet of trucks parked outside his house, the front of his house is hidden under a tent, and there are guys in hazard suits walking in and out of the house.

\n

\n

\n

\n I pull the car into the curb and we both get out and head towards the house, again there is the sign with a soldier guarding it, this time Luke walks forward and speaks to the soldier.

\n

\n

\n

\n "What the fuck are you guys doing breaking into my house?"

\n

\n

\n

\n I hang back a little as I don't like where this could be leading, it seems that my instincts are right, the soldier lifts his weapon and points it at Luke, I run at the soldier and knock him flat to the pavement, a shot goes off wildly but misses us both by a good margin.

\n

\n

\n

\n I turn back and run as fast as I can, collecting Luke in the process, we get back to the car and I start it up and with a screech of tires I quickly turn the car around and race away from the scene. I look in my rear view mirror and notice that an army truck is in pursuit. I press my footpaw down harder on the accelerator and quickly head out of town.

\n

\n

\n

\n We have now driven about four miles, the road is passing through a forest, and an idea comes to me. I know that the trees will provide us with adequate cover until we can work out where to go next. I quickly turn the wheel to the right and we spear off into the forest.

\n

\n

\n

\n I switch on the cars headlights so that I can see my way through the trees; I notice a cave entrance just ahead of me so I drive straight into it. Once inside, I quickly shut off the lights and the engine. We both get out of the car and head back towards the road to watch for any sign of pursuit, we hide behind a tree but we have a good view of the road, suddenly three army trucks drive passed at high speed, fortunately, because of our current hiding place, the trucks occupants don't see us.

\n

\n

\n

\n Now running on pure adrenalin Luke and I head back to the car, it will soon be nightfall and it will get cold, so for tonight we will stay huddled up in the car, then in the morning we will figure out our next move.
