This one’s going to be a mountain of writing. Just a fair warning. ^^
Not sure if some people I know have picked this up, but I am a huge dragonball fan, not just abridged, even thought I quote it so often I have to have an enforced daily limit. ^^ Most things dragonball. Original, the multiple ridiculous dubs of Z, the incredibly unbalanced games, the frankly ABSURD dragon ball heroes and yes… GT. All 3 different versions of GT. Which I tell you is no fucking easy gig, being a GT fan in this day and age, I’ve been copping flak from it even before TFS started ripping it a new asshole all this year long.
Thing is, I acknowledge that it’s a bad show but still like the GOOD parts, wish those good parts could’ve had more attention as they sometimes do in other media. And between Lani and Kaiser doing GTFS, almost every GT character being put in sparking zero, and daima being for a lot of people “GT done right…” It’s really planted the seed in my head for a while now. If they had given it actual time and effort to develop as a successor to Z and hadn’t sweatshop worked their writers to the bone to force out a show immediately… what could’ve been?
Well you can stop reading there if you like and just enjoy the art, but if you want to follow me on my own personal Masako style what-if of that, here comes the flood… >w<
UUB
I did Uub dirty. Be honest: *you* did Uub dirty. The first time you watched GT if you did, you were like me. I was curious about Uub but that wasn’t what we were there for: “Where’s goku? When does goku go SS4? When does the monke stuff happen?!” I’m glad I’m not the only one who’s recognized years later that Uub was set up as the perfect successor at the end of Z… He SHOULD be the successor. So first change right out the gate to GT: Uub replacing goku. Goku as a kid and the black star dragon balls could still be central to the plot, but Uub is in the pilot seat, maybe literally.
Design wise, I made him only a slightly more aged up Uub then the one we see in GT. He’s more at the teen goku agerange or a bit older rather then almost adult, and I wanted really hard to find a look that incorporated his original human design with the robe. The rest sorta fell into place, half-showing his origins as buu. Personality wise, I feel Uub would fit more into the role Pan was set up in: (Put the pichfork down and hear me out… ^^) He’s not GOKU. He doesn’t have a battle lust or a saiyan spirit from the onset, he’s more stoic, calm, level headed and I could imagine him having to be the voice of reason in several situations of GT.
Of course while I wouldn’t want to rob anyone of the super saiyan 4 transformation, I do feel like a lot of that stuff plot-wise could easily be swapped out with Uub losing himself to the evil/kid buu side and his more beastly nature coming out, before he becomes more calm and collected as majin Uub (I really don’t want to call it majuub. :P ). That sort of thing should be a central dilemma and ark, not glossed over. Goku and pushing the super saiyan limit would definitely still be involved, but it’d be Uubs personal r reckoning with his past self that would be center stage, and not thrust aside the moment goku can come and clean up the mess.
So if Uub’s more pan? What does that leave for…
PAN
This one could be a bone of contention for some people, but I’m pretty confident with my decision: People either love, or DESPISE pan. I’m personally somewhere in the middle, I don’t hate her and I think her voice actress is perfectly cast, but lets really open this up here: Pan SHOULD be the goku of the series. Making her the stick in the mud for huge chunks of the story who bosses the others around like a mum and feels left out… it’s a very japan thing to do. It’s a very *akira toriyama* thing to do, it’s basically chi chi again. But althrought Z and its spinoff shows it’s shown the saiyans do not look down on saiyan women, and pan is established at the end of Z to be a little girl who’s somewhat carefree and IDOLIZES goku. Idolizes grandpa. She would easily fit into the crew.
So I feel pretty confident in continuing *that* pan into GT rather then the one we got. We get a pan who’s more tomboyish, got more of a saiyan drive to fight, is way more aloof like her grandfather. *She’s* the one a bit more impulsive and likely to jump into a fight without thinking it through, while Uub would have to pull her back to think or strategize.
I also personally wouldnt’ve changed gokus design too much for GT, keeping the original orange gi that’s so iconic, or something ala daima. so I feel doing away with her somewhat strange GT design and slapping his on is a good call. Again, IDOLIZES Goku. Of course she would wear his gi, with maybe a story reason or 2 explaining the different colors. Some people might disagree with me on that, but I think she wears it well.
KRILLIN
Ohhhh boy, ruffling some feathers with this one? I don’t think Trunks should be the third main character, we’ll get to him in a bit… But I imagine a lot of people probably think I made a bad call here not putting *Marron* in. I’ve actually seen fairly similar GT fanart where people have done that. It would make sense if this was a “dragon ball: the next generation” right? Well I actually have thought about that but I think to start the show off? That initial arc of them going off to explore and find the black star balls? Krillin should’ve been along for that ride one more time. GT should’ve been his worthy sendoff.
Not the biggest fan of old man Krillin, but even with the timeskip between Z and GT, I think him graying was a bit too far of a choice, especially with Roshi looking almost identical right beside him like the immortal freak that he is. ^^ So along with a slightly younger uub and pan, we get a slightly younger Krillin, not quite in his prime but still getting roped into the journey due to his past experiences on namek. Possibly literally, kinda played it a safe design besides that by keeping his office getup intact so maybe he didn’t have time to change that before leaving earth. (although changing it to red to better reflect how he looked in the buu saga.) Can’t imagine him wearing it the whole show, but its still a look that works on him, isn’t quite as overdesigned as some others.
Now… Why Krillin and not Marron? Because I can imagine GT being his sendoff. Not the only one honestly. Krillin is absurdly loyal. This is both an in and out of abridged thing and it didn’t matter how much he was joked about or outclassed, he was always there to help. He’d be similar here, acting as an older and more mature mentor figure to “the kids.” BUT… only for the first half. Krillin dying at a certain point would not be something I took out, and would not be something I glossed over, it could very easily be a big heroic moment… that would force something out in Marron. I mean I know Krillins no super saiyan but he’s still a pretty damn strong earthling, and he married 17… makes just a little sense his daughter might inherit some of that on both sides. So from the point of Krillins death onwards, yes Marron would fill his role.
But I’m not talking about Marron just yet. Because if I do any theoretical follow-ups to this… She might deserve her own damn picture. >:3
TRUNKS
Alright lets get the outliers and whipping boy out of the way. I played a little bit of sparking zero with a “theoretical” version of this team and Trunks was always my front-man in that scenario... Where he would promptly be the first one destroyed in online matches. So I’ve taking to calling him whipping boy after that. While I’m not gonna do him quite as dirty as original GT did, I’ll see if I can avoid that in my take of him. ^^
I think cutting Trunks out entirely would be a bad call. We saw him as an adult during the cell saga, it always made sense that if we moved further and further into the future, seeing the new timeline Trunks grown up fully was the only logical conclusion. I don’t imagine that’ll change much in daima, considering… But I think the first sensible thing is to have him (and someone else. >:3) come in a little later. He fellmostly a comic foil during the first arc, spends chunks of the baby arc being mind controlled, and then sorta disappears entirely from the shadow dragon stuff. So first fix: Make a more relevant Trunks. This is a Trunks who got to grow up with vegeta and NOT being as deadbeat of a dad as the future him had to work off of. And would presumably have had some further training from him, goku and piccolo.
So this Trunks is way more self confident and wouldn’t need to go super saiyan to lift some fucking bricks. Lets keep him naive but sensible, and let him come in later in the show/arc as a bit more of a badass to save the day or be backup when needed most. Maybe an adult gotenks instead of a cockblock. Also if the baby arc was still central, then having him be a bit more resistant to baby because he’s not the egotistical lunatic his dad is would’ve been something to work with potentially. Like maybe baby chooses vegeta over him for that exact reason, his altruism makes him and goku/uub harder to control.
Design wise, played it fairly safe and didn’t change too much. Red scarf to allude to super, gave him back the sword, and ditched the shorts. NOBODY…liked the shorts. ^^
PICCOLO
Alright, last one. This one I fully admit is the only one that didn’t occur to me of my own volition, this one was a lot of what TFS talked about in their GTFS series, namely: not doing piccolo dirty. While I wouldn’t say he dies unceremoniously in GT, piccolo’s death definitely didn’t have the weight it should’ve. (though I and most people like where it goes afterwards with the heaven and hell parts. ^^) First and simplest step to fixing that: Have HIM go on the journey. Like Trunks I think maybe he should come in at a later point instead of just joining them from the onset, that’s my addition, but he absolutely needs to be a part of the crew, for at least that first or second arc. ^^ While Krillin has more of a human element that needs to be a part of the show, piccolo has always been an incredibly straight faced, stoic, almost grumpy character who doesn’t show how he really feels until it matters. So I don’t imagine he’d jump to the forefront as “part of the crew,” more hang on the sidelines. I admit I haven’t seen the super hero movie all the way through, but it seems like a big thing that movie was setting up was a strong relationship between him and pan, so building on that and having him acting as her almost goku approved guardian could even work. And of course lead to some tragedy. While I would give him more fun things to do, I ultimately think his self sacrifice should be incorporated somewhere in the story. Definitely not as sloppy as it was handled in original GT, but him self sacrificing to save all of them after the end of a big epic journey the five went on is a payoff I wouldn’t rob people of. Nor what comes after.
This is the character I really played it safe the most with for the design, as he would. Piccolo changed his look very little over the course of the series. I gave him a few wrinkles to show the passing of time without going full into elder namek/kami territory. I also did first try this with piccolos “nameless namekian” colors, I thought that might’ve been a good direction to take it, imply he’s grown a little more comfortable with that persona since Z, but I really don’t think it worked, he really has to keep the purple to be *piccolo*. Try it yourself if you’re curious, just take any picture of piccolo and apply the nameless’s blue on top of it. Doesn’t quite fit together. ^^
Alrighty… Thank you for listening to me gush about that in a 300 paragraph presentation. XD Some things I left out obviously, I didn’t touch Goku because I really have to think about that one, didn’t touch Marron for the above, didn’t touch Giru because I wouldn’t change much at all with him. Giru is good boy, better then most admit. But maybe I’ll do some kinda follow-up in the future with some of those if I feel the bite. GT deserves more than being done dirty on every possible corner of the internet by people who sometimes haven’t even watched it. ^^
