“You sure this was the place?" with the forest as dark as it is, I could tell if we been walking in circles. Brendan keeps his eyes on his pokenav since we left the pokemon center.
“I am positive." We been out here for awhile looking for that Wurmple, but so far we found nothing. “I placed all the info I could find in the pokenave and it says this is the place."
“The Pokenave can do that?"
“Yeah, how long have you had it?"
“I just got it today."
“Ah," he closed his pokenav and reached into his pocket. He pulled out a pokeball, “all right, come out Mudkip." The ball in his hand opened as light flew out and landed in a single spot. The light dimmed and change shapes. In its place was a small blue thing with fins and gills.
“Mudkip," it said.
“So this is your pokemon?"
“Yeah, Mudkip is a water type pokemon, he shouldn't have any problems against the Wurmple if we battle." Brendan gave a cocky smile as he turned to me, however I was not smiling. This Wurmple attack multiple times before, it is going to give us some trouble. “Mudkip, do you sense anything?" I notice the fin on its head twitch a bit then he shook his head. “So the Wurmple isn't here."
“How could you tell?"
“Mudkip's is a sort of radar. If any pokemon was close by, he would pick them up."
“I see. How did you get him?"
“My dad gave him to me."
“Professor Birch?"
“The same one, Mudkip is perfect for helping my dad's research on pokemon."
“Then why give it to you?" if he still had it, I wouldn't be in this mess.
“My dad is not a trainer anymore, so I decided to help him by going on a journey."
“And that helps him how?"
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a pokedex, “this here is a pokedex, it can collect info on pokemon if I point at them." He pointed the pokedex at Mudkip. The screen lit up and Mudkip showed up on the screen with charts and numbers at the side. “Now you try."
“Okay," I pulled out my pokedex and pointed it at Mudkip. The screen lit up and info started to appear. “Whoa," I was shocked at how fast it works.
“The pokedex is filled with the basic stuff, anything a person can look online or in a book, the more detailed stuff takes longer to compute."
“Detailed," when I looked at the screens again I notice Brendan's had more info.
“Like it stats and level."
“Level?" the way he was talking made it seem like this was a game.
“Yeah, the pokedex scans the pokemon and use the data it has to calculate an estimate of its level, although at times it is wrong." So the level thing is just a guess, might still be helpful when we find that Wurmple. “Anyway, we better look around. I can show you the other functions when we find Wurmple." We set off into the woods to continue our search.
We wondered thought the forest, stopping when Mudkip senses something, and then continued. We repeated this cycle for awhile. “Where is it," I asked. I can tell it was getting late and I never was much of a night person. I was starting to feel sluggish and tired.
Brendan on the other hand didn't look any worse than me, “it takes time, we are tracking a specific pokemon, and we are not going to just find it right away." I felt embarrassed by being scolded by someone younger than me. (I made Brendon 13 in this adaption, a year younger then Innes. I wanted them around the same age.) Where does he get his energy from? Mudkip stopped suddenly, the fin on his head moved rapidly. Was something close? The fin on Mudkip's head stopped moving and he pointed up a tree. We pointed our flashlights up in the tree.
On the tree was a round, purple pokemon with red eyes. “Looks like a Cascoon," Brendan said, “it's not who we are looking for so we should move on."
The way that Cascoon looked at us bothers me. I have seen that look before, I know I had. “Wait," I said to Brendan with taking my eyes off of Cascoon, “what pokemon does Wurmple evolve into?"
“That's simple. They evolve into Silcoon and…Cascoon!" When he said its name, Cascoon shot out a string shot at me. I barely avoided it. “Mudkip use water gun." Mudkip then shot water out at its mouth and hit Cascoon out of the branches, but Cascoon never hit the ground. Like a trick Cascoon moved away from us. It using string shoot to move around. “Mudkip use water gun again." Mudkip shot out water and hit Cascoon in the center, but it used the water gun as a way to increase his movement and swung away. Cascoon has gotten away. I was dumbfounded that Cascoon did all that like a stunt pokemon.
When the moment passes I spoke up, “I am positive that was the Wurmple we were looking for." Brendan was silent, “we have to go after it."
“Why," Brendan asked, “you saw how it went, that Cascoon didn't even bother to fight back. We shouldn't go after it."
“Just because it didn't fight back doesn't mean-“
“Cascoon's cocoon was designed so it can take hits. The fact it ran away means it is close to evolving. If we go after it, we wouldn't stand a chance with our skills."
“How can you be so sure?"
“Cascoon evolves in to Dustox, a Bug and POISON type pokemon. That poison it used as a Wurmple would be much more effective, to the point it might even affect humans possibly even hospitalize them." that was a scary thought. “We best get back to the pokemon center, it going to come look for us when it evolves, it's better to be at the pokemon center when that happens."
“But what about the people in town, wouldn't Dustox attack them looking for us?"
“I think so. Dustox always get revenge on whatever attacked them as Cascoon, so he might attack others as well."
I couldn't believe what I was hearing. “Are you saying we should just run away and hide till this all blows over?"
“No, I am just saying he shouldn't go after it at the moment. We need to contact the pokemon rangers and let them deal with it."
Pokemon rangers, specially trained Trainers who deal with wild pokemon, they are usually called if wild pokemon attacks human. They could handle this but, “you go back, I'm going after Cascoon."
“What, Innes think this though. I said if it evolves, it is going to come after us. Why go after it?"
“You said it yourself. Dustox goes after what attacks it for revenge. If we go back now, odds are Dustox will get into town and attack other people there while looking for us. If people get hurt because of me I won't forgive myself, which is why I am going…alone."
When I said 'alone' Brendan looked at me with shock, “What, are you mad? I understand if you are upset about what happen to Treecko, but going after it alone is suicidal."
I grabbed Poochyena's ball and let him out, “you can you back if you want, I am not going to stopping you. Just know I am going after Cascoon and your stop stopping me."
Brendan and I stared at each other for awhile. I wasn't going to back down, I will beat Cascoon. Brendan signed, “alright, if you mind is made up I am not going to stop you. Let me explain the pokedex's other function first before you charge in." Brendan cleared his throat, “along with the collecting data you can also use it in battle. Just point it like you are scanning pokemon when you battle, and the pokedex will enter battle mode. In battle mode, it gives and you the condition of your pokemon and the opponent. Most experience trainers usually can understand the battle from experience, but it is useful for a beginner like you."
“Thanks," I turned to leave.
“Hey Innes, be careful out there."
“Will do, come on Poochyena." Poochyena bark as we ran to catch up with that Cascoon.
We followed the remains of string shots while chasing after Cascoon. For a pokemon that can't move much, it sure can move around. If we want to defeat it we need a plan to stop it from escaping. Poochyena's Fire Fang could easily defeat it if it can land a hit, but the way Cascoon move using string shoot makes it difficult to hit as it would use that to escape before the final move.
As we ran through the forest, my eye caught something by my side. It was nothing, exactly what I needed.
We found Cascoon, lying among the tree branches, it purple silk failing to hide itself. I grabbed my pokedex and pointed it at Cascoon. The screen light up and info on Cascoon was displayed on the screen. I didn't understand what each stat mean, but I can figure it that out later. “Let's go," Poochyena and I ran from our hiding spot, reveling ourselves to Cascoon.
Poochyena got in his battle stance in front of me, making a low growl. “Poochyena use Tackle," I commanded. Poochyena tackled the tree, since Cascoon was out of his range. Cascoon responded with a String Shot at me, but I let it hit me. With the string connecting me with Cascoon, I yelled, “Poochyena use Fire Fang." Poochyena's mouth erupt flames as he bit the string, setting the silk rope on fire.
The silk burned quickly, singeing Cascoon and I. Cascoon was surprised with my idea. It shoot another String Shot, but in the opposite direction of me and Poocheyena. It was trying to escape again. When it swung down, we followed it.
Poochyena and I followed as we lead it to the trap. So far Cascoon has been acting the way I expected it to do. So far so good, the distance Cascoon shoots its String shot is the same distance every time it moves. Even the seemingly random movement is easy to predict during the chase. We got close to where the trap was. Now for some convincing acting, “alright, use Tackle." Poochyena sped up to tackle Cascoon into the trap.
Cascoon went flying backwards into the trap. It went beyond the tree line into a clearing. Since it uses it String shot and trees to move around, take one away and it can't escape. It can still use string shot on the trees it passed, but that will only slow it down making it more vulnerable for the coup de grace. “Alright, time for the finishing blow. Poochyena use Fire Fang!" his mouth again spew flames as he charge the flying Cascoon and bit it. A mini explosion erupted, covering Cascoon in flames.
I got out of the tree line and walked into the clearing as the flames dies down. It took awhile for what we did to sink in, “we won," I whispered. “We won, we beat it!" I cheered, throwing my arms out with Poochyena barking and cheering with me. I looked at Poochyena, “you did a good job," I got down to pet him when he bit my hand. I didn't feel him trying to dig his teeth in my flesh, was he trying to show me some affection.
Thought our celebration was cut short with a cracking sound coming from Cascoon. We both turned towards the Cascoon as it started to move again. It was wriggling on its side as a cracking sound intensifies. Bit by bit, parts of it hit the earth with each move till the roof of it collapsed on itself. I stared in horror as something rose itself from the remains of the Cascoon. The Creature eyes locked on me and said one thing, “Dustox."
