When Nathan was sucked onto Kaerwyn, one of the first things he did after he got the ability to use the rifter to go home, was to go home to get Dawn. However, due to outside circumstances, he was blind at the time he targetted the rifter, and by bad luck, ended up in a world very similar, almost indistinguishable, from his own, and retrieved that world's Dawn instead. When this error was eventually discovered, Nathan went home to get his Dawn from his own world...

...and found out that she'd died in the interim.

He returned to Kaerwyn alone, and was rudderless for a time, before he realized that as much as he loved Dawn, that she was gone, and she wouldn't have wanted him wallowing in pity on her behalf. That he had to move on with his life, and find a new meaning.

He'd known Duel for a while before, as they were coworkers in Kaerwyn's Night Watch, and they'd had some time together. Duel was from a more normal earth, but she loved dragons, even having a biomod to have golden dragon scales on her body in some places. She was about his age...they were working together as partners sometimes...

...and she made him smile. And reminded him of happier times. And over time, they became closer. And started going out. And since then, they've supported each other, been each other's solace, and generally just fallen in love.
