December 23, 2342 – Starbase Five; Main Commons
(10:27 AM)
The arrival at Starbase Five went smooth and docking was a rather straightforward affair that would be handled by the station controller. After he had taken a shower, Lliam had met up with Kathy and chatted with her before the ship was docked with the station. Once docked everyone started to disembark and ventured into the station.
As Lliam and Kathy were about to leave, MaiGhan and Timmy ran up to them and asked if they could go with them. Lliam chuckled and Kathy nodded as all four of them left the ship. As they stepped through to the inner sections of the station from the docks, Lliam stopped and looked around in wonder. Where the station on the orbital elevator of Xoto-II looked like a scum filled, drug dealing, gambling cesspit, Starbase five was almost the complete opposite.
Nice and decent shops lined the main commons sides and there were even kiosks in the middle; almost like a mall, selling all kinds of wares. There were restaurants, clothing shops, general goods stores and more; as well as people just going about their daily lives, some kindly talking with shop owners, some fixing up their stores while parents were taking their children shopping.
Everything seemed so peaceful; too peaceful, Lliam thought as he studied the sight. Everyone looked as if there was no concern of the war that continued to rage between the Federation and Humanitists. Lliam sighed and let the matter go; all these people had suffered through the war before their worlds split away from their respective governments. After looking around for a few more moments Lliam realized the others had already taken off. Looking around, he spotted Kathy and the kids not too far ahead of him.
Stepping up next to her he asked “So, where do we start?”
After humming for a second she replied with “Well, I don’t know about you but I could go for a good old home cooked meal, none of that replicator crap.”
“But don’t we need to be…”
“Relax Lliam, I even told the others to take a little R and R but to keep their ears and eyes open. We may draw attention to ourselves if we go asking for specifics. Besides, we don’t know exactly what we’re looking for; only that what we’re looking for has to have happened in the time frame of a couple weeks. Now, does anything sound good to you two?” Kathy said before turning her attention to Timmy and MaiGhan.
He looked at her with a bemused expression as the kids nodded their heads. He then grinned as both of them enthusiastically said “Waffles!”
With a smile she chuckled before saying “Waffles it is then.”
A little while later they found themselves in a diner that was still serving breakfast. The kids got their waffles; Lliam ordered two plate sized pancakes though; loaded with butter and syrup. Kathy followed the kid’s lead and ordered waffles as well. After they had been served, they struck up a conversation with their waiter.
Kathy casually asked about anything interesting going on. She was surprised when the waiter said there were rumors flying around about Freelancers on the station. When she curiously asked for more details he apologized and said he was short on the facts but to ask around if she really wanted to know.
They decided to hurry and finish their late breakfast; as the kids had already finished theirs, before heading out to pursue the rumor. Before they left Kathy excused herself as she headed to the restroom. Lliam paid the tab and left the waiter a big tip for the info. He decided to wait for Kathy outside with the kids and as he left the diner he accidently ran into a well dressed man; knocking him over in the process.
The man Lliam knocked over wore a finely pressed white suit and tie with a black shirt underneath. He had a pair of square framed glasses of which cerulean colored eyes resided behind. His hair was almost a silver in color; platinum blond to be more exact. If he had to guess at his size Lliam figured him to be five feet seven inches tall just like himself.
“Oh crap, sorry man. Here let me help you up.” Lliam said and extended his hand to help the man up.
The man reached up and took hold of Lliam’s hand as he helped pulled him up before asking “You alright?”
In a serine and tenor voice the man said “Yes I’m fine, thank you.”
He brushed off what dirt had gotten onto his suit as Lliam apologized once again for knocking him over. “Don’t concern yourself, it’s perfectly fine. I shouldn’t have been walking so close to that door. Now I must be on my, if you’ll excuse me.” The man said politely as he continued on his way.
A few moments later Kathy walked out and patted Lliam on the shoulder “Alright, let’s take a look around.”
They began asking around different areas for anything interesting that may have happened recently; letting Timmy decide where to head next for the most part with MaiGhan throwing in a few suggestions so that they were both entertained. While there was a bunch of useless information they acquired, there was also information similar to what the waiter had said. Freelancers were on the station and from the multiple sources they asked; the numbers ranged from one to twenty; most likely the results of a rumor spreading like wildfire.
However about an hour later they overheard someone speaking of a Mors Mortis transport that arrived nearly two weeks ago. Kathy told the others to wait for her while she went to have a chat with the man. Lliam watched as she sauntered over to where the man was talking; or rather his eyes were drawn to her backside as her hips swayed from side to side.
He leaned against the wall behind him as he watched her. Her brown and cream colored fur stood out against her blond hair. Her hazel colored eyes shone brightly when the light hit them. Her lean build easily showed her toned muscles; he easily recalled what her body looked like without her clothes on. He chuckled when he remembered she still wanted him to pay her back somehow.
Without there being a rush on things; nothing urgently pressing anyway, he realized he had never really stopped to look at her this way before. She was really quite attractive and not just in a sexual way; which she seemed to love using to tease with. His thoughts went back to when she spoke of her being at peace and that smile she gave him before saying she could still find someone.
His thoughts were interrupted when he heard what sounded like someone struggling with something that had quite a bit of mass to it. Looking around he spotted a female lynx who looked like she was in her late thirties maybe early forties. She had beige white fur and stood about four feet three inches tall. She had medium length black hair and green eyes and was wearing a white T-shirt and a pair of grubby overalls. She was trying to load a large trolley with a bulky and heavy looking container.
He noticed she had a military feel about her and also that people seemed to avoid her; maybe due to that fact. He thought she looked familiar as well but he couldn’t recall why. She wore a frustrated look on her face as more people continued to pass her by. Sighing, he shook his head before looking around. He smiled as he saw what he was looking for.
“Hey MaiGhan, how ‘bout you take Timmy over to that ice cream shop over there and get yourselves some? My treat.” He said as he held out a credit chit. “Once you’re in there I want you to wait there till Kathy or I come and get you, okay?”
“Sure” MaiGhan said.
“Cool, thanks!” Timmy said as both of them walked over to the ice cream vender before he walked over to where the lynx was.
“Damn-it! Sure, when it’s my turn to get the supplies I get the heavy load. Should’ve brought Victor.” She said then laughed before saying “No, should’ve got Kevin’s scrawny ass to come help.”
“Excuse me, do you need some help?” Lliam asked as he walked up to her.
She turned around and looked at the albino wolf before her who just offered to help. Sizing him up she could tell even with his help the two of them wouldn’t be able to lift the container. “Thanks for offering but… even with your help we won’t be able to move it.” She said to him, but noticed the small smile he had grew slightly.
“Don’t worry, I can get it for ya.” Lliam said and examined the rectangular container.
“Not to seem rude but I highly doubt that.” She said as Lliam looked for a place to get a good hold on the thing.
“Mind if I open it so I can get a good hold on it?” he asked to which she laughed.
“If you think it’ll help, knock yourself out.”
Lliam smiled as she doubted him. He popped open the container and grabbed near the opening before shifting the object further onto its side so he could get a hand under it. Once he had, he lifted it up as if it weighed nothing before setting it easily on the trolley. He then turned to her and said “There you go, no problem.”
She started stuttering for a moment before sighing and asking “How?”
“I’m stronger than I look, names William but I go by Lliam.” He said as he offered up his hand.
She nodded her head but Lliam noticed she had a suspicious look on her face. She reached out and shook his hand with her own as she introduced herself “Abigail, sorry for doubting ya there… and thank you, it would’ve taken a while for one of my friends to come up here and help me.”
“Well I heard you trying to lift the thing and noticed no one stopped to help you so I decided to do what they should’ve been doing.”
“People ‘round here don’t help out military types which is why I was a little surprised when you offered to help. Hmm… you’re military as well, aren’t ya?” She asked.
“Yeah, I am. What branch did you work in?” Lliam asked as she secured to container to the trolley.
“Fleet, I was a pilot for twelve years. What about you?”
Lliam chuckled a little before saying “Special Forces.”
“Really, ya don’t really look it but I should know by now you can never judge a book by the cover.” She said and chuckled as he finished securing the trolley and stood up. “Anyway I need to get goin, maybe I’ll see ya around eh?” she said as she shook his hand again before she walked around to the other side of the trolley. She waved goodbye to him as she carted the trolley around a corner.
He waved back and started heading back to where Kathy was still talking. He noticed that she was now speaking with another person. He was about to head to the ice cream shop when he saw her start to head back towards him so instead he continued towards her. “So what did he say?”
“Well, it seems the rumors of there being Freelancers on the station only came about after a Mors Mortis ship docked with the station. Two furs exited the craft wearing what looked like Freelancer armor with the names Alpha and Omega on them.” She told him.
“Furs, from a Mors Mortis transport and possibly Freelancers?” He asked when he whispered to her “Do you know any Freelancers with those names?”
“No, but the only Freelancers who’ve had the names Alpha and Omega were supposedly taken to Mors Mortis at the end of the Freelancer Civil War. Records stated they were furs; wolves at that.” Kathy whispered back.
Lliam hummed for a second before asking “So any idea on what these two look like?” Lliam asked.
“Yeah the man gave me what he knew. Both of them are wolves and they look like twins. They have green eyes with pale gray fur, nearly white hair and they stand about six feet tall with only one difference between them. One’s thinner while the other’s more muscular.” Kathy informed him.
“So these two are wolves as well? What are the odds of that?”
“I don’t know, but at least we have something to go on.” She answered.
“Do you know if they’re still here?”
“The second man I spoke to said he bought the Mors Mortis ship a few hours ago from a wolf matching the description of the thinner of the two. However when I asked for details he said the one he bought it from was wearing regular clothing.”
“Well, hopefully we can get some answers about what happened at Mors Mortis from them.” Lliam said.
“Hopefully we can find them… where are MaiGhan and Timmy?” Kathy asked as she looked around.
“I let them use one of my credit chits to get some ice cream. Come on, they’re over there.” Lliam said and lead her to where they were before following up on what Kathy had learned.
**************
Starbase Five; Trade District
(2:00 PM)
A couple hours had passed, Lliam and Kathy had taken the kids back to the ship and let everyone know the details of the people they were looking for before heading out to search for them. Now with something to go on, everyone split up to search the station. Kathy had dragged Lliam towards the trading side of the station. While browsing what was for sell or trade she figured if they had sold the ship maybe they’d try selling their armor or maybe, they were even looking to buy a ship.
While they searched Lliam kept catching himself staring at Kathy; averting his eyes when he did so. He started wondering why he was becoming so infatuated with her. Ever since the night he agreed to share her bed there had been a feeling; a tugging sensation, growing in him. It always seemed to pull when he was away from her. He only now realized it because the feeling was gone while he was with her.
Lliam was so wrapped up in his thoughts that everything around him was a blur. He finally let his eyes linger on Kathy as they walked, he became so focused on her that everything else just faded away. Though everything else was a blur, when she stopped or changed directions he stopped and did the same as well; his feet doing all the thinking he needed. Things went like this for at least half an hour before he was rattled from his thoughts by someone grabbing his shoulder.
Looking at who had just grabbed his shoulder, Lliams first thought was Nate. He had the same brown eyes that Nate had and the same deep hue of red colored fur. The white fur he had covered his jaw and throat before continuing down his chest and was also on the backs of his arms and the tip of his tail. He had the same black colored fur on the tips of his ears and paws and stood at five feet nine inches tall; just like Nate.
But where Nate had short cut military styled brown hair this fox had slightly longer hair in the front that was spiked up. Not to mention he was wearing camo colored cargo pants and a grey shirt with what looked like an average every day vest; but Lliam could tell it held TE blast plates that protected the wearer from energy based weapons.
Within a couple seconds Lliam took all this in as the fox said in disbelieve “Lliam! Is… is it really you!?”
“Uh… who are you?” Lliam asked in confusion.
“Dude! It’s me!” the fox said unhelpfully.
Kathy overheard the exchange and looked at the fox that was bothering Lliam. She noticed that he had a look of surprised excitement on his face. She listened to him speak as he patted Lliam down; almost as if he didn’t believe he was real. “You’re alive! I can’t believe it, you’re really here!”
“Uh, really who are you?” Lliam asked again in an annoyed voice as he was patted down.
“It’s me man, Daniel!”
“DAN!” Lliam yelled in surprise after a few moments; Dan’s face lighting up with joy as Lliam finally realized it was him.
“Yeah man, it’s me.” Dan said and grabbed Lliam’s hand and shook it.
“Lliam, is everything alright?” Kathy asked as she watched this newcomer with slightly hostile eyes.
“Who’s this?” Dan asked curiously as he eyed her up and down.
“Yeah everything’s fine Kath, this is Daniel Barker; Nate’s energetic twin brother. Dan this is Kathryn Nance.” Lliam introduced them.
Dan whistled before saying “You’re quite a looker! So do you prefer Kath to Kathryn?”
The moment Dan whistled and continued to eye her up and down Kathy got the feeling he was undressing her with his eyes. Her first impression of him was ‘hormone driven male’; not that any male wasn’t hormone driven, but just like the majority of the males she ever met she got the feeling all he wanted to do was get into her pants. So she instantly to a disliking to him as she said “Yes I do, but only Lliam can call me that. Everybody else calls me Kathy.”
He was about to speak but she cut him off by adding in cold tone of voice “You however… can stick with Kathryn.”
“Oh… cold.” Dan said to which Lliam chuckled. “Anyway” He said to change the subject as he looked from her to Lliam “How’d you get here man? What happened to you? Are any of the others alive?”
“Damn dude… it’s like the first time we met.” Lliam laughed.
“Whatcha mean?” Dan asked; confused.
“You’re going rapid fire with the questions! Anyway it’s a little bit of a long story…” Lliam said when Kathy tapped his shoulder to get his attention.
When he looked at her she whispered to him “Look, over there by that shop” When he looked at where she was talking about, he noticed the two pale gray wolves down the way; one slightly more muscular than the other.
“That story’s gonna have to wait Dan… can ya hold on a sec?” Lliam said as he and Kathy started towards the two wolves.

“Thank you for your time sir.” Louie said as he finished talking with the shop owner.
“Well, any good news?” His rambunctious and quick tempered brother Zeig, asked.
“There are no ships for sell with what we got for that transport.” Louie said as he started walking to another shop.
“We should’ve kept the damn thing, but nooo… we had to sell it and for what? A messily two hundred and thirty two thousand credits!?” Zeig said in an annoyed and pissed off manner.
“Well for one; it was registered as a Mors Mortis transport, two; we don’t need a ship registered as such, we need a ship with a simple registration code, nothing fancy. Or do you want to be found out and shot down?” Louie replied with a hot retort.
Zeig sighed and deflated a little before saying “Then why didn’t we just try to get the ID changed?”
Louie sighed in frustration at his dimwitted brother before saying “Because we had no money whatsoever and before you ask; on the off chance that they were still active, I checked on our old accounts but they no longer exist.” He sighed again before saying “That and… I think we’d be better off staying here.”
“What!?” Zeig nearly yelled; his anger starting to rise. “Why the hell would we stay here? We have things to do!”
“I know brother, but have you even checked the net? The current war is being won by the I.F.H.W. and the Outcasts. Hell we couldn’t even head back to Earth, even if we had transportation!” Louie said in a slightly raised voice.
“Why not!?”
Louie was about to answer when a feminine voice said “Earth’s been taken over by the Humanitists and their Outcast buddies.”
Looking over, both of them noticed the two wolves standing in front of them. One a female with brown and cream colored fur, blond hair and hazel colored eyes while the other was a male with snow white colored fur and hair with red eyes. It was obviously the female who answered but it was the male who spoke next.
******
“Were sorry to bother you but are you two the ones that arrived here on a Mors Mortis transport?” Lliam asked in a humble tone of voice.
“Piss off shrimp! I’m in no mood to answer any of your questions.” The more muscular of the two said before he started eyeing Kathy “Hmm, on second thought, I wouldn’t mind answering any of her questions.” He said as he gave her a leer.
Kathy’s ears were laid back as soon as he spoke and a low growl escaped her throat at the way he looked at her. Before she could say anything the other one slapped the muscular one in the head before saying “Watch what you say Zeig.” He then turned and spoke to Kathy “Please forgive my brother’s rudeness, it’s been a while since he’s been in the company of any type of female.”
As he spoke she relaxed a little while giving Zeig an icy look. “I’ll forgive him if you answer our questions.” Kathy said in a more assertive tone of voice.
“Fuck that, let’s go Louie.” Zeig said and purposely bumped into Lliam as he passed him.
“Hey!” Lliam said and grabbed onto Zeig’s shoulder. “What the hell is your problem?”
The moment Lliam grabbed onto his shoulder, Louie said “Oh shit…”
Before he could do anything, Zeig snapped around and had already planted his fist on the side of Lliam’s jaw. After the hit he kicked Lliam in the stomach and sent him a few feet away. “Don’t ever touch me.” He said as he walked over to his brother.
“Don’t you think that was a bit much?” Louie asked as he shook his head.
“No, he might have a slight concussion and cracked ribs but he’ll be fine.” Zeig said as Lliam stood up behind him.
“With your temper, I’m just glad you didn’t slip and kill him. But I don’t think you’re done.” Louie said with a grin as Lliam came up from behind him and tackled him.
Kathy watched Louie with slight confusion; wondering why he wasn’t moving to help his brother. Maybe he knew his brother could handle himself or maybe he figured it was justified payback for attacking Lliam. She was about to ask him why he was letting Lliam attack his brother when she heard Nate’s voice behind her.
She checked behind her and noticed Nate exchanging a few quick words with Dan before they both headed over to them. Bringing her attention back to Lliam she watched as he and Zeig rolled around on the ground; both trying to gain the upper hand on the other. It was obvious that Lliam wasn’t using his abilities at all but Kathy was still surprised at how resilient Zeig was to his attacks.
“Okay what’d I miss?” Nate asked as he stepped up next to Kathy.
“My brother’s short fuse was lit and your friend here retaliated.” Louie said from where he stood.
All three of them; and eventually Dan who finally walked up next to Nate, watched as Lliam and Zeig eventually stood up and traded hits, insults and taunts. Their heads turned from Lliam to Zeig as they traded hits; almost as if they were watching a ping pong match with the ball being hit back and forth from player to player, before they threw each other to the ground again. This went on for a few moments longer before Zeig finally lost his temper and hit Lliam in the gut with full force.
“Shit Zeig! What the hell do you think you’re doing?!” Louie yelled as Lliam hunched over and fell to the floor.
“Ah shit man… I… I didn’t mean to hit him that hard!” Zeig said as Lliam remained unmoving.
“Lliam!?” Kathy, Dan and Nate said in surprised unison at the fact he was on the ground.
“Shit! It was an accident I swear!” Zeig said when Lliam slowly started getting up.
Lliam coughed up some blood from the force of the hit. While his body was in pain, his mind was racing; coming to the only conclusion he could think of. He looked up at Zeig; with a fire burning in his eyes, and noticed a faint green glow that was already fading from the wolfs eyes. He was positive now that this wolf’s genes were altered just like his own; but was is due to family heritage like Lliam’s or did he go and have it done personally, he couldn’t tell.
The pain that coursed through Lliam’s body made it hard to concentrate; let alone move. He slowly stood back up on unstable legs; his eyes a full glow that no one had took notice of. Zeig took a step towards him and was met with Lliam’s knee to his gut.
He managed to look up into Lliam’s eyes; after he hunched over coughing, and noticed they glowed just like his did. He staggered back a few steps and took a couple breaths before saying “You’re… like us?”
Louie had a pensive look on his face as Lliam brought his guard up. Zeig grew a wicked smile on his face as Lliam motioned for him to come at him; causing things to get serious. Louie called out to his brother before he went against him “Careful Zeig, he seems… different than us.”
When Louie said this, Nate decided question the wolf after his perceptive comment. “Your brother said Lliam was like ‘us’ so I’m presuming you too have abilities such as this?”
“Yes” He said after studying the fox a few moments. “But the way you all are acting tells me you’ve seen this more than once… and I’m assuming not from just him?” Louie asked.
“True… his brother is the same. Although he was physically far stronger than Lliam, it’s part of why we want to ask about Mors Mortis.” Nate told him.
“Why is that connected to asking about Mors Mortis, and how do you know they already asked?” Louie asked out of curiosity.
“Lliam and I are both telepaths; though his mental powers awoke a few months ago he’s improved dramatically. He sent me what was going on which is why I showed up… and to find out why my brother was here.” He admitted before continuing “His brother; on the other hand, was held on Mors Mortis and we want to know if you knew him or if you might have escaped with him.” Nate explained to him as a crowd started to gather to watch the fight; Dan cheering Lliam on the whole time.
Louie sighed and nodded his head before saying “To answer the first question… yes, we came on the transport from Mors Mortis. My brother and I along with two others escaped together. One was a little girl named Aurora and the other was her father…”
“Rrahkarr” Nate stated with a grim look.
“Y-Yes… how do you…” Louie started to ask when his eyes lit up in realization. “Then… that’s his brother… but he said his brother was dead?!” he asked in confusion.
“Well… we all thought that. I’m guessing you were on the Ira a few months ago before heading here?” Nate asked to which he nodded. “Well we were a few hours behind the Ira when you left it then. We followed the Ira a while… and when we found it, it had been shot down.”
“They were what… are they… dead?” Louie asked in a sad tone of voice as his mind came to the only conclusion for them being here.
“We believe so, we found a lot of blood… tracks and… Rrahkarr’s arm but we didn’t find any bodies. That and the ship that shot them down didn’t leave any kind of trail; we couldn’t even detect it when the Ira was hit. We followed you because we had no other leads...”
Louie looked away before sighing. When he turned around he gave Nate the details about that day. Nate sighed and looked to see Kathy’s reaction but she was nowhere to be seen. He walked over to Dan and asked if he had seen Kathy but he shook his head.
“Is there a problem?” Louie asked as Nate looked confused.
“I doubt it, give me a sec.” Nate said as he tried to contact Kathy, only to receive a response similar to a broken or disabled device. After seeing this Nate said “Actually… I think there is.”
“We better stop this fight then.” Louie said and called out for his brother to stop.
Even though he was in the middle of fighting, Lliam had a growing unease in his heart. He heard Nate and Louie exchange words and heard Louie call out to stop the fight. Zeig however was having too much fun as he fought Lliam. Lliam wanted to find out what was going on and was about to use his other abilities to stop the fight when Louie grabbed Zeig from behind; his arms wrapping around his brother in a hold, as he took him down to the ground.
“Quit fighting our great; however many it would be, nephew you muscle headed idiot.” Louie said once he had a hold of his brother.
The mentioning of this caused Zeig to completely stop as his mind registered what Louie had just said to him. His reply was a simple yet confused word. “W-What?”
“The wolf before you is William Sutarra; Rrahkarr’s little brother.” Louie said as he let go of Zeig.
As Zeig turned to ask his brother what Louie had asked Nate, Lliam walked over to Nate and asked what was going on. His answer didn’t set too well with Lliam and Nate could tell as much. Looking at Lliam he noticed something different about him, he decided to ask “Lliam, have you been experiencing any… strange or… unusual feelings as of late?”
“Yeah… but I really didn’t know what they were.” Lliam answered.
“When did you notice you had them?”
“Today actually, they disappeared when I was with Kathy. I only noticed I had them when they were gone.” Lliam mentioned before saying “Now that she’s gone though they’re worse… they’re not like they were when I was just away from her…”
“Lliam…” Nate said with a sigh and a shake of his head. “This is another reason I wanted you to harden your heart. Psionics can develop true connections with others and being connected with someone else, you can feel both emotional and physical feelings from them.” Nate said when worry struck Lliams face. “What is it Lliam?”
“I… I feel fear… but it’s not mine.” Lliam said confused as he felt these foreign feelings.
“You have a Psionic bond with Kathy, Lliam. That is what you’ve been feeling. A Psionic who has bonded with someone will always feel out of place unless they are with that person. While away from them they will feel a tugging or pulling sensation to go to this person. They will also feel what that person feels; to a degree. If they’re afraid or frightened you’d know.” Nate explained to him.
“Then… Kath is afraid right now… no that’s not right, it’s something else… something more.” Lliam said as the feeling intensified.
“Search for her… you’ll be able to find her quicker than I could and if your bond is strong enough… you can see what she sees.” Nate told him before walking to the others only to stop after finding something.
Lliam did as Nate said and tried to search for her. Using both his Psychic and Telepathic abilities he thought of and looked for Kathy. He was surprised when he could sense her and concentrated on where she was before falling to his knee and gasping for air. He wasn’t able to see what she saw, but he could feel what she felt.
She was being carried, by who Lliam didn’t know but he did know she felt as if she was paralyzed and afraid. She couldn’t move when she tried; and not due to any bindings, and was scared at what whoever was carrying her would do with her in her state. She wasn’t able to speak but she was calling out for help in her mind, she was calling for Lliam.
