Nathan, during one of his adventures in the realms, made a grave misstep that cost Athene, his goddess he's sworn to serve, and consequently accepted a punishment to spend a substantial amount of time as a crippled(non flight capable) northern hawk owl. He also had to be entirely forthright and honest about why he was punished, as part of learning his lesson and accepting the consequences for what he'd done.

Later on, his incarnation on Kaerwyn was present in the town for a plot when an artifact dropped into the town and time itself was thrown into chaos, affecting people all over town with things from their past or the past of the kaerwyn town. And here he is, turning back into that owl form as it hits him, shrinking out of his clothing and gear.
