Bethany Le Croix s from Brittany and her family are proud Bretons, preferring that to the overlordship of the French monarchy.

The Le Croix family are on the surface normal, a pillar of what you could all middle class society. However they are not as they seem.

Rather than a pious catholic family, they divert their worship to a serpentine entity called The Great Cosmic Serpent. This appeared to some in the region in a bizarre vision, which the church sought to control and cast out as a sign of the devil. Some families though continued their worship and as such basements and dark cellars became the congregational gatherings, which was also used to foment plans of independence.

Bethany was born into this and after her father had an accident which prevented his role of full ritual master, she quickly ascended the ranks, which contrary to church roles, allowed for women to rise to greater ranks. As her role, she is to oversee the rites and ensure they start, conclude and all traces of the rites removed. There's a lot of secrecy as if anyone in authority caught them out then there's no telling what would happen.

Her appearance is warped because the rites do change those practicing them. Her tail is slowly becoming more serpentine and the red eyes were a result of gaining 'forbidden' esoteric knowlege.
