The Troublemaker - By Nateday
Title can't be empty.
Title can't be empty.
Another little tease of my long waiting 22 Weeks 'till Home story, in particular, from Chapter 2, Just after Isiat has been flown home due to injuries sustained in combat, when he chances upon an all rather attractive looking feline nurse treating him. The awesome accompanying artwork by the talented Nateday! Go check out the original here: http://www.furaffinity.net/full/18939824/

Some forty five minutes (And a quick stop by Starbucks for her second cup of the morning), Shadi stepped through the reception of the hospital, making her way up to her ward to begin the day’s work tending to her patients. Melva, the night shift nurse waved to her as she stepped from the elevator, clearly glad to see her so she could go home. That was never a good sign. It meant that the new patients were stirring up trouble again. The Honey Badger managed her sweetest ‘You’re going to have a great day, I swear it!’ smile, despite the dark lines beneath her eyes.
Shadi didn’t buy it for a second. She took in the familiar surroundings of the hospital ward as she approached the desk, inhaling the heavily filtered air that lingered with the scent of antiseptics and cleaning agents used to scrub the entire ward each day. They were comforting smells to Shadi; They never failed to remind her of the first hospital she had worked at back home in the US. The walls and floors were all that same sterile white colour that every hospital seemed to share, with strips of phosphor-fluorescent light tubes in the ceiling illuminating her way.
“Okay, who’s the troublemaker this time?” She asked without even bothering making the usual pleasantries, leaning one arm against the nurse’s counter with an unimpressed, flat expression.
Melva held her smile even as she passed over the clipboard with the patient lists attached to it, seeming far happier to get rid of the responsibility than a reasonable person ought to have been. She was a little older than most of the young nurses working on Shadi’s wing, but she had a way with her words (And temper) that could bring even the rowdiest of patients to heel. Her dark grey fur was starting to show white hairs poking through; Clearly, it had been an involving night.
“Bed 17, male, of course. 28 years old, pulled some stitches swimming in the Themes apparently from a gunshot wound a few weeks ago. Long story short, it got infected, and his mates dragged him here after he picked up a fever.”
Shadi cocked her eyebrow, one ear perking sharply as her tail swished slowly back and forth.
“A gunshot wound? Where was he? Islington or something?”
“Afghanistan actually. I’d almost say he was cute, if he weren’t such a bloody arse towards all the female nurses. I had to send Chelsea home before she turned around and gave him two black eyes to go with the hole in him. Nellie was fixing to knock him out by leaving a tank inside his door and cracking it just a fraction, but he’s got a guest with him.”
“A guest? It’s 6am, visiting hours aren’t even open.”
Melva simply shrugged, rising from her seat as she unclipped her swipe card from around her neck, heading for the time clock on the wall. “Well honey, if you want to tell him to leave, that’s your business. Just go ahead, you’ll see.”
